On the best little street in St. Paul, you’ll find a storefront that upon walking in transports you into Brooklyn, Nepal, Nashville–all blended together through the wares offered by BlackBlue, tucked between a place called The Muddy Pig and Mango Thai.
Maybe it’s the worn wood floors, the scent of leather or the friendly service but as soon as you pass the threshold you’ve become a different person. An important person--and one that will walk out onto the street with a different perspective.
When owner Steve Kang got started he realized that there wasn’t a big market for raw denim in the city. With his entrepreneurial spirit growing while in college, Kang wanted to pair that spirit with his passion for clothing design and found a happy medium in the retail space that is now BlackBlue. The storefront’s tight space is packed with all seasons’ wear and its respect to true craftsmanship in every brand available is apparent. Amongst our favorites are the Ebbets Field hats tucked near the door or the Left Field Greaser Jeans collection, fitted with bandana pockets and American made Universal hardware.
While the men’s section is of more substantial size, choices for women are more than worth a drop by. Coats and jackets are always on seasonal rotation and multiple materials from brands like Engineered Garments and Barbour are always available in stock. Summer dresses are never in short supply during the middle months and often lead patrons to walk out in one to a local spot for a drink.
With care for only providing the highest level brands built by dedicated craftsmen, the service by Kang and his staff is reflective of the quality goods surrounding you when walking through the front door. Inspired by Kang’s personal tastes, BlackBlue is an illustration of how passion can turn into experience and how experience turns into looking damn good.
